Please use the checklist below to ensure you and your family are taking the appropriate
home fire safety measures. You should aim to have every ‘yes’ box ticked.

PREVENTION YES NO ESCAPE YES NO
          1. We know we should never play with matches and 1. We have a ‘fire escape plan’ which we have all
lighters. (They should be kept away from children). practised.
          2. We always turn off the cooker hob when it is left 2. We know where the keys for windows and doors
unattended. (Never leave cooking unattended.) are kept.
          3. We know we must not overload an electrical socket. 3. We know what to do when escaping:
          4. We switch off and unplug all electrical appliances at •Feel the doors with the back of our hand to check
night, except for those that are designed to be left on. it’s not hot before opening.

          5. We know we never leave candles or tea lights •Crawl low under the smoke when escaping.
unattended. (Use a proper candle or tea light holder •Close doors behind us.

e.g. under the curtains, on the TV.) •Stay out once we have escaped.
          6. We put out all candles and any smoking materials 4. If we are trapped, we know we should go into a safe
properly. (Do not smoke in bed.) room (with a phone if possible to call the Fire &
          7. We close all doors at night to prevent fire and Rescue Service), put something at the bottom of the
smoke spreading. door to block the smoke, open a window and shout
“FIRE!!!” and stay low under the smoke.
             DETECTION

          4. We know we should never remove batteries from 3. We know we must stay calm, speak slowly and give
the smoke alarm. the address where the fire is.
