RED ALERT - WHAT IS FIRE?

Fires produce a great deal of heat. Do you know how heat moves? ACTIVITY
                                                                                                                                                PRINT FROM DOWNLOADS

Heat can move in three ways:
                          1. Convection.
                          2. Conduction.
                          3. Radiation.

           1. Convection is when warm air How is heat moving in the
rises and is replaced by cool air. following examples?
e.g. when we boil a kettle, steam

rises taking heat up through the air.

           2. Conduction is when heat travels
               through materials.
                                                                                                                       1 2
e.g. when there is a fire in the home,
check each door handle with the
back of your hand. If it is warm/hot,
               do not open it.

            3. Radiation is when heat is sent by
waves - just like a radio signal.

               e.g. a wall heater sends heat into 3 4
all parts of the room by waves
which travel through the air. ANSWERS: 3: RADIATION, 4: CONVECTION. 1: CONVECTION, 2: RADIATION,
