RED ALERT - THE FIRE SERVICE
Fire Engines - there are three types of fire engine... ACTIVITY

1. Water Tenders have a crew of Can you spot the different types of engine in the pictures below?
up to five firefighters. They carry over
1,800 litres of water. They weigh
over 11 tonnes (11,000 bags of
sugar!), are over 7 metres long and
three metres high. Water Tenders
have ladders up to 13.5 metres high,
they have many lengths of hose,
cutting equipment to rescue people
from trapped vehicles and many
other specialist pieces of equipment.
2. Aerial Ladder Platforms carry
just two crew members. They are
used to extinguish fires in high rise
buildings and rescue people who
are trapped. Ladder platforms are
over 11 metres long and weigh over
28 tonnes (28,000 bags of sugar!).
The platform, when fully extended,
reaches over 30 metres high.
3. Some fire engines called Special
Incident Units attend all kinds of
major incidents including building
fires, road accidents and chemical
spillages. The Units carry extra
rescue tools, generators and
floodlighting. They weigh over eleven COLOUR IN
THE THREE
tonnes (11,000 bags of sugar!) and FIRE ENGINES
are at least eight metres long.
